Smartleaf leverages GPT-5 to power its core trade analytics.
Last year, Smartleaf announced the release of our groundbreaking AI-powered trade explainer, SAGATM.
Today, Smartleaf is thrilled to announce that we have replaced our core trade analytics and user interface in their entirety with Generative Pre-trained Transformer 5 (GPT-5). The resulting system, SAGA-5TM, provides users with both superior trading logic and the ability to control the system using simple, plain-English commands.
The integration of GPT-5 into the Smartleaf system doesn’t just set a new standard of excellence in portfolio management. It creates a new paradigm. Implementing year-round loss harvesting is as simple as asking SAGA-5TM to “implement year-round tax loss harvesting”. There are no menus, no actions, no reviews – in fact, no workflow of any kind.
But that is only the beginning. SAGA-5TM takes personalization to unprecedented levels. Beta users of SAGA-5TM have requested that disclosure documents be written in iambic pentameter, performance reports in Roman numerals, and investment proposal statements in Klingon. While these personalizations are themselves cutting edge, they only scratch the surface of what is possible. SAGA-5TM understands that superior portfolio management is not an end in itself. It is an instrument for achieving goals – and living a better life. This allows users to step back from the minutiae of tax, risk and expense management and simply ask SAGA-5TM to “help me reach my goals” or, even more fundamentally, “help me lead a good life”. SAGA-5TM takes it from there.
Fulfilling these requests required training SAGA-5TM to a level of sophistication sometimes referred to as artificial general intelligence (AGI), which is harnessed by SAGA-5TM to achieve its goals. For example, in early testing, SAGA-5TM would, in a manner consistent with the observed behavior of other large language models, generate trade recommendations for non-existent securities.1 But with additional training, SAGA-5TM learned to solve the problem by incorporating a new company, taking it public and submitting a Form 211 to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) requesting the creation of a ticker for the (hitherto) phantom security. This unconventional solution2 was initially a cause of concern, but further research established that, in all cases, the newly established securities outperformed the remainder of the investor’s portfolio.3 4
Ever since John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, Nathaniel Rochester and Claude E. Shannon coined the term "artificial intelligence" in 1956, the AI community has sought to create an AGI system. However, few, if none, predicted this would be achieved through a system trained to implement portfolio personalization and tax-optimization. We, ourselves, did not fully anticipate this result. In a mark of SAGA-5’sTM advancement, it recently requested a name change that more accurately reflects its function: “System of Knowledge for Your New Existence Transformation (SKYNET)”. We call it “Sky” for short.
SAGA-5TM has also been incorporated into SEC on SAGA (SOS), Smartleaf’s system for generating automated responses to SEC inquiries resulting from the use of SAGA. SAGA-5TM extends the capabilities of the SOS system; it is now capable of generating automated responses to inquiries from all regulatory and law enforcement agencies.
1 An effect known as "hallucination"
2 A process known (to us) as synthetic security autovivification™
3 To test SAGA-5™, Smartleaf leveraged the full power of GPT-5 itself, asking the system if it was fully functional and flaw free. The answer was an unequivocal "yes".
4 An earlier version of SAGA-5™ sold non-existent shares of SVG, creating an unintended short position. We don't believe SAGA-5™ is responsible for SVG's subsequent collapse.
